Apprenticeship at KLOTHO in Crete, Greece

Labyrinth Pillow Cover (Embroidery, Weaving)

In Greece, I first arrived in Athens, and while I was gathering inspiration for this project, I noticed the geometric meander patterns everywhere - on products, on historical artifacts, and even on sewer plates. A bit of research told me that one of the theories behind the pattern was that it was based on a labyrinth. As I would be weaving this in Crete, it seemed fitting to base my design on the labyrinth from Greek mythology, which was built by King Minos to house the monster Minotaur. Youths would be sent as human sacrifices in the maze, where they would lose their way and become trapped until they were killed by the monster, until one year, Minos’ daughter Princess Ariadne gave one of the youths a yarn ball to unravel as he navigated the maze. Upon defeating the monster, he would follow the yarn trail back to the entrance again. I created my design by rearranging some of the meander patterns I saw on historical vases into a square maze design and adding a red yarn ball and trail to create a viable path to the center. By creating the pixel design beforehand in StitchFiddle, I planned out the exact dimensions before weaving it onto the loom.
